How to Throw a Dog Birthday Party in 7 Easy Steps

One thing we know is this: the day your fur baby entered the world is a special day indeed. The moment you brought your pup home for the first time is the moment you found a best friend and lifelong companion. And, that kind of love and commitment is absolutely worth celebrating!

Whether you celebrate your pup’s actual date of birth or their “gotcha” day (the day they entered your life), your dog’s b-day absolutely deserves a little extra attention. Why not take the day to shower them with love?

Having birthday dog parties is all the rage these days. After all, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the canine love of your life, and spoiling our pups is just fun — what wouldn’t we do to get wagging tails and kisses of excitement?

Here’s how to throw a dog birthday party in 7 easy steps.

1. Find The Perfect Gift.

Every good birthday begins with a thoughtful gift. This year, treat your pup to something exciting! Maybe there’s a well-loved toy that needs repurchasing. Or perhaps your fur baby needs a new collar for their fresh b-day look.

Only you know what your pup wants most. However, if you’re feeling stuck, puzzle toys and treatsters are great birthday presents. They’re stimulating, enriching, and typically an instant fur baby favorite.

2. Decorate The Venue!

Once you decide where you’re having the doggy birthday party, you’ll need to decorate! Finding dog decorations for birthday parties is shockingly easy. You can hang pet-themed ? pinatas?, dog balloons, and whatever else your dog-loving heart desires.

Our favorite trend is the pop-up photo booth at dog birthday parties. Most include a simple backdrop, a balloon or two, and a few costume options for you and your fur baby. (Nothing beats puppy eyes under a pair of glasses.)

Working with a budget? Create a cute poster and print a few pictures of your birthday pup to lay out. It doesn’t have to be extravagant to mean a lot.

3. Don’t Forget Dog-Friendly Snacks …

As you know, snacks are usually the best part of a party. Lay out a few of your fur baby’s favorite treats alongside dog-friendly fruits and vegetables. Be sure to keep an eye on the guests — too many raw vegetables can give pets stomach issues.

If you’re feeling lost, use pawTree’s barkuterie recipe as a guide to your snack board.

P.S. Don’t forget about hooman snacks! You’re celebrating too — and you should enjoy yourself. Whip up your favorite charcuterie-style snack board for the occasion.

4. … And Of Course A Dog Birthday Cake!

Dog birthday cake is an absolute must for any doggy birthday party. And believe it or not, it’s quite simple to make. Your fur baby will be absolutely drooling, and our recipe makes 12 mini-cupcakes to serve all the guests at your party — Bonus points if you sing them happy birthday as you bring out the cupcake.

Here’s our favorite dog birthday cake recipe:

Heat the oven to 325° F. Mix pawTree’s snickerdoodle baking mix with ¼ cup vegetable oil, ½ cup water, and 1 egg until dough forms. Fill 12 cupcake tins with dough and cook for 20-22 minutes.

Let stand for 10 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool. Top each cupcake with a dollop of plain, no-sugar added yogurt!

5. Invite The Puppy Crew To The Event.

After all that prep, you’re finally ready for guests. Invite all your fur baby’s loved ones (pet and hooman alike) to the party! Send out texts or e-vites when you’re ready.

Since it can be a lot to host friends and all their pets, we recommend giving a definite time frame, so your guests come and go in a timely manner. In our experience, 2.5 hours is the just right amount of time for a dog birthday party.

6. Play Lots Of Games.

Chances are, your fur baby will just romp around happily with all their friends — no plans needed. If you want to go the extra mile, plan a few games for the event.

Fetch and tug-of-war are entertaining, easy choices. Depending on the dogs present, you could even set up a simple obstacle course or scavenger hunt. If you’re hosting in the winter, take a look at a few of these indoor games, so your fur babies don’t get too cold.

7. Send Home Party Favors To The Friends.

Last, but certainly not least, thank your friends for helping you celebrate your special pup by sending them home with a party favor!

Party favors work best when they’re useful, fun and small. We recommend making small bags of tasty treats and leftover birthday cake. You could also throw in a dog birthday party hat (if you have any extras after the photo booth).

As fellow pet parents, we at pawTree know that our fur babies make our lives fuller. That unique bond deserves a full day of celebrating! No one knows your sweet companion like you do — you know exactly how to shower them with love. So, go do what you do best, and have fun with your baby!
